Yongchul Kim (born 1982 in Yeosu, South Korea) studied painting in South Korea and since 2014 at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart, where he graduated in 2020. He lives and works in Stuttgart.

His works address the question of the origin of existence and human identity, as well as the influences of modern society on the individual. Through his works he captures moments of constant change. His are mainly expressive and rough brushstrokes, in which the surface figures dissolve. Sometimes the people or animals that Yongchul Kim portrays emerge from the shadows, other times they are swallowed up by them. Either way, they must constantly defend themselves from indefinable forces. His painting can be read as an attempt to better understand himself and the world around him.
